Biography

With his undeniable people skills and the naturalness at which he guides and communicates with actors, one might assume Chad Reynolds was a specialist, a distinct ‘actor’s director’, focused entirely on performance in each production. But Chad’s gentle and easy approach with actors is equally matched with his unfailingly sharp eye for detail.

Chad will throw himself fully into every project until the precise vision is achieved at every component. His technical command banks on the strength of his thorough experience in filmmaking, not only as director but as a producer, director of photography, gaffer, sound technician, editor, and colourist. And his background as a musician and instincts for sequence and mood provides Chad’s work with a rhythmic, visually flourishing style.

His exacting approach produces consistent results across any subject and genre, but it is in documentary and humour-based productions where his gifts particularly shine, creating work that is both funny and emotionally rich. Chad has directed campaigns for distinguished brands including BHP Billiton, SaskTel, Procter & Gamble, Bauer Hockey, and Destination Canada.

SaskTel – Student Savings Tips

Stylish visual flourishes, a clean and striking aesthetic, and a light, clever comic touch – this commercial for SaskTel displays director Chad Reynolds at his finest. Designed to resemble a Wes Anderson film, the project called for Chad to oversee a very specific design in set, costume, camera, performance, and editing, to orient everything to a precise visual and tonal concept. Shot on the Arri Alexa with post done at Barbershop’s Saskatoon Studio, this ad is evidence of the range of talent at Barbershop.

BHP – Building Something Special

In this advertisement for energy giant BHP Billiton, we needed to reveal the innumerable rewards waiting for those embarking in a career at BHP’s new Jansen mine – and specifically, how rich life can be both during and outside of work. We spoke with real people, collected stunning footage of the neighbouring cities and nature, and captured the sincere joy brought about when individuals feel a strong sense of value in their vocation.

Accomplishing a comic scene in under thirty seconds that has a clear narrative and characters, looks cinematic, has a humorous payoff, and most importantly, communicates an impactful message from the client, is something we try to make look effortless, but in reality, requires a great deal of consideration. Perfect casting, the right visual aesthetic and tone, and a director with instinctual comic timing are all essential ingredients in landing the joke.

Procter & GambleSmile Campaign

This story of the incredible Dr. Sheri McKinstry, a woman who overcame substantial barriers to not only become a leader in her profession but give back to the community, was a project we poured our hearts into. Produced for the multinational corporation Procter & Gamble as part of their Smile Campaign, we supplemented Sheri’s remarkable story with beautiful animations and thoughtfully designed b-roll, providing insight and intimacy to this account of a woman dedicated to making the world a brighter place.

We are always thrilled when a company, like Winfield United, wants to infuse a bit of creativity, humour, and originality into their marketing plans. A straightforward objective – to promote the benefits of using Croplan seed – becomes an attention grabbing and seedy affair, with meticulously designed close-ups shot in studio, a jaunty voice over, and campy performance. Sometimes it’s good to be corny.

Federated Co-operatives Limited – Fresh Facilities

Both cinematic and humorous, as well as a little gross, this is one of the most enjoyable productions we’ve proudly produced with FCL. Working off their clever concept, our production design and art team constructed some marvellously grotesque sets and props, while our cinematographer and gaffer ensured things looked cinematically slummy, to contrast with FCL’s famously clean facilities. And behind Jeremy’s gift for directing comic nuance, the final product is one we’ll never want to flush away.
